We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the brilliant minds behind the groundbreaking project: "Synthetic touch for brain-controlled bionic hands: tactile edges and motion via patterned microstimulation of the human somatosensory cortex" by Giacomo Valle, Ali H. Alamri, John E. Downey, Robin Lienkämper, Patrick M. Jordan, Lee E. Miller, Robert A. Gaunt, Charles M.Greenspon and Sliman J. Bensmaia.
Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the somatosensory cortex (S1) can evoke tactile sensations, with the location and properties adjustable by changing the electrode or stimulus parameters. This can be used to provide feedback from brain-controlled bionic hands during object interactions. However, ICMS currently offers a limited sense of touch, restricting fine motor control essential for daily tasks. This project aims to enhance ICMS-based artificial touch to convey more complex information, like object geometry and motion, for improved dexterity. Such detailed tactile feedback has not been reported in humans, whether via peripheral or cortical stimulation in neuroprosthetics.
