Fontan is a surgical procedure used in patients who are born with single ventricle physiology. The Fontan operation directly routes systemic venous return into the pulmonary circulation bypassing the sub pulmonary vessel. The Fontan operation is not a cure and can come with unanticipated consequences later in life including atrial arrhythmia, thromboembolism, and liver disease, which will require treatment and close followup with your physician.
