Throughout its long history, Buddhist teachings and practices have served a wide variety of people as a way to come to terms with the suffering of life and cultivate balance and compassion in an awakened way. In interacting with different times and cultures, the practice of the dharma has kept changing in response to circumstances—a great example of the Buddha’s teaching on conditionality. What are the conditions of this time or ‘saeculum’? How is the dharma relevant today for lay people who want to creatively engage with the present suffering and awaken? How can it be adapted to our circumstances while remaining connected to the profound teachings of the Buddha?
During two online sessions, Martine Batchelor and Bernat Font will explore questions relating to the delicate task of adapting the dharma to our circumstances. They will do this with a respectful attitude, and a pragmatic orientation that puts Buddhist teachings and values in service of leading a good and awakened life in this world, both personally and together as communities.
