On the Venice Simplon-Orient, every glass panel and marquetry detail reflects the charm of the 1920s, when travel was as much about style as the journey itself. The train fell into disrepair in the 60s, when air travel took over and forced the closure of the service. In 1977, James Sherwood bought two abandoned carriages at a Sotheby’s auction. Over the next few years, he restored over thirty original 1920s and 1930s carriages, bringing the golden age of travel back to life.
