Psalm 22 is one of the most powerful and moving psalms in all of Scripture. It expresses the deep cry of a righteous sufferer overwhelmed by pain, abandonment, and injustice, while still revealing an unshakable trust in God.
The psalm opens with a heartbreaking appeal: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”—words later spoken by Jesus on the cross. Through striking images of anguish, mockery, and persecution, the text portrays intense suffering, yet without giving way to despair.
Gradually, the psalm shifts toward hope, praise, and the proclamation of God’s faithfulness. It announces that suffering will not have the final word, and that God’s salvation will be proclaimed to the ends of the earth.
