Chapter 5 Across the boreal forest to the Tsaatan. Family horseback riding to the reindeers’ kingdom

This is the adventure that Mila and Asier offer you, together with our two daughters, Uxue (12) and Garazi (9), told over several chapters.

Over 22 days, we covered 465 km on horseback, crossing mountains and taiga between Lake Khovsgol and the Siberian border, until we reached the camps of the reindeer herders: the Tsaatan.

In Chapter Five, we show you Day Eight of the expedition. We leave behind the vast open landscapes and head deep into the taiga—the boreal forest—of the Sayan Mountains, with the goal of reaching a reindeer herders’ camp, the Tsaatan, during a long and demanding 20 km day on horseback.

At the altitude where we are—around 1,600 meters—the taiga is characterized by an open-canopy forest dominated by Siberian larch, accompanied by a remarkable diversity of shrubs and herbaceous layers. The terrain is often extremely muddy, even swampy, alternating with rocky sections and numerous rivers that must be forded, making this stage a particularly challenging ride.

In the end, we reach our goal: the eastern camp of the reindeer herders, whose inhabitants had just migrated from another camp used earlier in the summer.
