This Zoom lecture was organised by PINE (Pluralism in Economics) Maastricht on 10 February, 2022.
In Maastricht and in cities in virtually all advanced economies around the world, (especially) young adults struggle to find affordable housing. Housing prices constantly reach new heights. But how did we get here? Josh Ryan-Collins argues that exploding housing prices are not an inevitable trend. Rather, it is is due to the failure of economic theory and policy to conceptualise the role of land and credit in the economy. In this sense “the housing crisis is about much more than just the housing market: it lies at the epicentre of the crisis of modern capitalism.”
Dr Josh Ryan-Collins is a Senior Research Fellow in Economics and Finance at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. His research takes a cross-discplinary approach, combining macroeconomics, economic history, sociology, and political economy. He published the books “Where Does Money Come From?” (2011, NEF) and “Why Can’t you Afford a Home?” (2018, Polity). His co-authored book “Rethinking the Economics of Land and Housing” (2017, Zed books) was listed in the Financial Times’ top 12 economics books of 2017.
