Описание: Aerial view of the remains of the Upper (Top Pits) Varteg Hill Colliery Varteg, near the towns of Blaenavon and Pontypool South Wales. The Colliery opened in 1860's and closed around 1958. The shaft, the stables, canteen and foundations are still remaining as at present. There are also signs where the tram network was once which has become a path for walkers. This tram network system is believed to have led to the famous 'Varteg Incline' that was ahead of its time and not much remains. John Vipond & Company was a well established name in mining in the early 19th Century
