My goal is to make reeds as consistently and quickly is possible, this is largely achieved by simplifying the process. Unlike many of my mentors, I do not pretend to be a physicist, botanist, or acoustician when talking about reeds. Part 4: Beveling, done AFTER forming. This is the only thing I do that some might call a waste of time, but don't knock it until you try it!
Note: I switched to 220 grit sandpaper for beveling, which is MUCH faster, then I saw an even faster way to get this done thanks to Trent Jacobs! • A dremel to bevel
I studied bassoon and reedmaking with Laine Bryce (MN Opera), Charles Ullery (St. Paul Chamber Orchestra), and Phillip Kolker (Baltimore Symphony/Peabody Conservatory). I took what worked for me from each teacher to create reeds in a style I suspect might horrify each of them.
