Overview In this new edition of the multimedia performance Geistzeit VII, created specifically for the unique setting of the Samurai Museum Berlin, the Berlin-based collective ELEKTROKAGURA fuses contemporary dance, theater, and digital art to retell the haunting legend of Okiku, one of Japan’s most iconic ghost stories.

As the final chapter of the Geistzeit cycle, which has explored and reimagined Japanese ghost myths over several years, this performance traces the tragic fate of Okiku—a loyal servant who refused her master’s advances and was drowned in a well. Her spirit returns, counting broken plates and seeking justice. Only a wise priest can bring peace to her tormented soul.

The show blends Japanese tradition with Berlin’s experimental scene, featuring intense physicality, immersive digital scenography, and hallucinatory soundscapes. Audiences are drawn into a deconstructed medieval Japan, where vengeance and redemption collide.

About the Collective Founded in 2015 by dancer Ichi Go, visual artist Yukihiro Ikutani, and musician Cedric Douhaire, ELEKTROKAGURA creates transmedia performances that merge dance, electronic music, and digital painting. Their work reinterprets Japanese mythology through a contemporary lens, connecting ancient stories with modern emotional landscapes.

After the Kojiki cycle (Shinto creation myths), the Geistzeit series focused on ghost legends that continue to shape artistic imagination. Okiku marks the final piece of this cycle.

The group now operates from their new space in Reinickendorf, Umspannwerk, hosting concerts, performances, and workshops that expand their participatory and interdisciplinary practice.
