On Saturday 21st September 2019, I drove into my office at Ogba Shopping Arcade, Lagos and at the entrance I saw about 5 men standing. I greeted them and to my greatest surprise, one of them ran after me in a combative manner. I was scared and and immediately had to stop. My initial premonition was that perhaps there is a danger or something might have happened in the Shopping Complex that he needed to draw my attention to. I wind down and to my greatest surprise, the young man started abusing me. He became increasingly aggressive toward me saying that I aught not to have greeted them in the manner I did insisting I should have just drove past them instead of just waving at them with such level of disdain. I was still in shocks when this young man started pulling the car door in an attempt to forcefully pull me out of my car. Before I could step out of the car, he started punching me and in the process tore my shirt, singlet and one of his fingers entered my right eyes. The other men standing and discussing with him rushed to the scene and held him. I called the police and before I could get a response from the Ogba police command, this young man and his friends went straight to Ogba police station boasting that I can’t do more than a dead rat. Surprisingly, it turned out that they were highly connected car dealers within Ogba and has most of the police officers on duty as their friends. At the station, the officers on duty refused to take my statement insisting we can settle amicably. I refused and insisted on pressing charges and all of a sudden, one of the police officers on duty started shouting at me. He pulled out his belt and insisted I seat on the floor. It was after the confrontation with the police officer that I was given a sheet of paper to write my statement. At this point, I had be beaten and humiliated by both an intruder into my office complex and an officer of the Nigerian Police Force.
It is pertinent to note that despite my insistence, the Nigerian police force Ogba Command is yet to charge the case to court.
As a law abiding citizen of Nigeria, I insist that it is my constitutional right to seek legal redress at any point I feel my fundamental human right is being trampled upon.
I therefore call on all well meaning Nigerians and the police hierarchy to as a matter of urgency, call the Area Commander Ogba to order and mandate him to immediately stop this intimidation and charge this case to court.
