Durga Bhuwaneshwari - the consort of Lord Shiva, the god concerned with dissolving the universe and bestowing moksha, is worshiped as a personification of Energy / Shakthi without which the whole universe would remain static. She functions as the Vital Dynamic Energy sustaining the universe.
She is depicted with four arms, the lower two hands bestow abhaya ( fearlessness and protection ) varada ( granting boons ), the upper hands sport the paasam ( noose ) and ankusam ( goad ). Trishoola ( trident ) how ever is her main Ayudha ( weapon ) and is equally venerated.
When the evil takes over and creates havoc it is she who assumes various forms and vanquishes the demons and restores dharma ( righteousness ) and shanthi ( peace ).
In her aspect as the warrior goddess engaged in battle with the demons, she is described as aruna varna or red colored goddess fuming in rage to put an end to the wicked and there by relieve her devotees from misery.
