Forgetting names, asking someone to repeat the question, losing car keys, getting lost and asking for directions happens often. More often than many of us would care to admit. When this is part of dementia, losing car keys can mean having to give up driving, and losing independence. However, it is not about losing dignity, integrity, determination, and personal drive. Ron Roen takes us through the visible and invisible signs of living with dementia. His approach applies to all of us in our daily life, regardless of what challenges and how overwhelmed we may feel. Ron takes each day as a new opportunity, finds success in daily achievements, builds support networks of friends, stays motivated, and is not afraid to keep asking questions. In the US Navy the sonar ping and responding echo is a way to keep on track, alert for danger and orient to surroundings. When someone you know sends out a "ping"...will you respond? Meet Ron Roen: Navy submariner, intelligence officer, and now, a speaker on resilience in the face of dementia. Ron’s life has been defined by courage and devotion. He began his naval journey in 1987, serving with distinction aboard the USS George Bancroft before advancing through the Enlisted Commissioning Program to become a commissioned LCDR. Over the course of his career, he held critical intelligence assignments around the world and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. Along the way, he earned a BS in Sociology from the University of South Carolina, a master’s in security management from Bellevue University, and pursued advanced studies in Homeland Security and Emergency Management at Kaplan University.
Today, Ron faces one of his greatest challenges—navigating the profound impacts of dementia, and he is a strong advocate for dementia, motivating others to maintain unwavering resilience, and determination to keep showing up even when life gets hard. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
