I'm happy to have X on either side of an equation as I'm working. It's my preference to have positive X, on whichever side. Depending on the constants in your equation, sometimes it's easier if you have negative X all the way through. Be unafraid of negative X, and learn that there are times when it's actually best to keep it negative all the way til the end.
