Director Zack Snyder is a workout junkie and ever the chronicler of masculine pursuits as he has demonstrated through films like 300. He always wanted to do a classic heroic workout montage in the tradition of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky and other great action films.
He precisely got to that here with an in-shape Ben Affleck who beefed up with 25 pounds of muscle for his role as Batman. Who better to show doing a brutal workout regime that Batman and Affleck as Batman does weighted-pull ups, sled-pushes, dumbbell brench press, barbells squats, tire-pulls and hammer exercises galore to craft a veritable tower of muscle.
The music is the scary Batman theme from the movie by Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL as the suitable accompaniment for the grit and machismo of this set piece.
