Daily life in disaster preparation and Fire/EMS training at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station during the Space Shuttle era.
The historic Space Shuttle program ended in 2010 capping a 29-year run that saw the construction of the International Space Station, the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope, the first American female in space, the first female Space Shuttle pilot, the first female commander, the first African American in space, and countless other accomplishments. Sadly, two flights reminded us just how risky and complicated human spaceflight can be.
The people in this video were some of those who worked behind the scenes, on the ground, to protect the Spaceport and its unique assets during that time. Hands-on simulation evolutions using hardware and human actors were key to achieving that goal.
The Kennedy Space Center & Cape Canaveral Air Force Station looks very different today as NASA goes forward in space exploration. Some of the hardware and gear now reside in museums or have been lost to history. Many of the facilities have been demolished.
