Are you greasing your fifth wheel hitch enough?
We are full-time RVers, and we tow with the B&W Companion Hitch. Full timers should be checking these before every trip or at least monthly. If you tow less often, check every 6 months or before long trips.
⏬️Let us know your tips for hitch maintenance. ⏬️
1️⃣ Coupler (Saddle) Grease Zerk
Why: Helps the coupler pivot freely.
When: Full timers aim for once a month. Or about every 6 months for occasional RV use (4-5 trips per year).
2️⃣ Polyurethane Bushings
Why: Decreases friction between the coupler head and pivot arms.
When: Remove and reapply grease each trip or aim for about once a month and when you notice dirt and grime build up.
3️⃣ Jaws & Kingpin
Why: Smooth rotation of the kingpin within the hitch jaws.
When: Each trip or aim for about once a month and remove and reapply if you notice dirt and grime.
4️⃣Coupler Plate
Why: Reduces friction between the hitch’s top plate and the trailer’s pin box.
Option 1: Clean off and regularly apply a thin coating of multi-purpose automotive chassis grease to the flat top surface of the coupler head. Remove and reapply as needed if you notice dirt and grime buildup.
Option 2: The Easy Way! Switch to a lube plate, and you don’t need grease here. A lube plate snaps onto the trailer’s kingpin, providing a mess-free, lubricated surface.
The 10" lube plate works great for the Companion or Patriot. It should be replaced about once a year—or sooner if you notice damage or uneven wear.
Keeping your fifth wheel hitch properly maintained is key to smooth operation and long-lasting performance.
