On the bench today is a 1:60 scale Siku Alfa Romeo Montréal, which had a production run from 1971-1974. It’d be a rare sighting to see one of these tooling through your neighbourhood. Pretty sharp looking car. Mine has seen better days. The silver metallic paint job is shot. The doors are intentionally black - that’s Siku stock - but they’re well chipped up too. I’m debating whether or not to keep these wheels. I like Siku wheels because of the white lettering. These are in decent shape. We’ll see… And I wish all diecast companies would cease and desist on the coloured windshields. I don’t really want to stick with this paint scheme, but I’m bound to pick something that goes with yellow!
The Alfa Romeo Montréal was introduced as a concept car in 1967 at Expo 67, which I attended in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. Originally, the concept cars were displayed without any model name, but the public took to calling it The Montréal. It was a 2+2 coupe using the 1.6-litre engine of the Alfa Romeo Giulia TI and the short wheelbase chassis of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT, with a body designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone. One of the two concept cars built for Expo 67 is displayed in the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese, Italy, while the other is in museum storage.
The first production car was shown at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show and was quite different from the original, using a 2593 cc cross-plane V8 fuel injected engine that produced around 197 hp, coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. Since the concept car was already unofficially known as The Montréal, Alfa Romeo kept the model name in production.
Stylistically, the most eye catching feature is the car's front end with four headlamps partly covered by unusual grilles that retract when the lights are switched on. The slats behind the doors contain the cabin vents, but apart from that only serve cosmetic purposes. The real car had 6 vents, but this Siku model only has 5.
You might be surprised to learn that the Montréal was more expensive to buy than the Jaguar E-Type or the Porsche 911. It’s true. When launched in the UK, it was priced at £5,077 rising to £5,549 in August 1972 and to £6,999 by mid-1976.
The Montréal remained generally unchanged until it was finally removed from price lists in 1977. By then, production had long since ceased as Alfa struggled to sell their remaining stock. Total production was around 3,900. Interestingly, none of them were sold in Montréal since Alfa did not develop a North American version to meet the emission control requirements which applied in the United States and Canada.
In pop culture, a Montréal can be seen in the 1974 movie The Marseille Contract where Michael Caine drives a metallic dark brown example. A careful observer can find a red Montréal in the beginning of the James Cameron movie True Lies immediately prior to Arnold saying "Here is my invitation." A Montréal is also featured in the 2017 movie Atomic Blonde.

FYI: I don't collect, display or sell the cars, and they’re certainly not competition entries. All Maple Leaf Matchbox Makeovers finished projects are put in custom blister packs and go to my local Goodwill store where they are given to children for free.
Note: Due to the use of paint stripping chemicals and power tools, this channel is not intended for viewing by children. Age 14+ is recommended.
