Tennyson's Ulysses speaks of the last journey of the famous Greek epic hero. Although his strength is flagging in his age, he is not the sort of man to stay and rule despite having endured extraordinary suffering to return home.
Tennyson's nostalgic poem is a paean to duty and an injunction to his fellow Britons who have had empire thrust upon them at the very time that as a nation their allegiance to a notion of God's providence is on the wane, and novel and cynical theories of human nature take root. Without a Christian view to guide him, his response, as that of the ancient Romans, is to appeal to a Stoic form of philosophy.
