As there are no Absolute books out this week I thought I'd talk about something a little different. This is a video about the very first comic book I can remember reading, 1989's Batman Monthly 17 from London Editions Magazines.
This was a British newsstand reprint of three Batman comics, Batman 340 from 1981, 1957's Batman 110, and the Catwoman back-up story from Batman 346, published in 1982.
The headline story is A Man Called Mole by Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas, and Gene Colan that features a dramatic reimagining of an obscure golden age super villain, The Mole.
This was a gruesome revenge story, and was very frightening to my young self, which is why it took hold in my mind.
I'll open the video with a brief explanation of the comic, and an outline of the main story, before moving to an unscripted flip through of the entire comic.
If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more of my work, my book Rogues’ Gallery is out now on Amazon worldwide. It’s a collection of essays exploring the villains of Batman: The Animated Series that dig into what makes Gotham’s most infamous figures unforgettable:
