The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor's Forgotten Hero
On December 7, 1941, when the USS Arizona was struck by a Japanese bomb at Pearl Harbor, most of the 1,177 crew members who died were doomed by the massive explosion. But 6 sailors trapped on the burning ship had one last chance for survival - if someone was brave enough to throw them a lifeline.
Joe George, a 26-year-old Boatswain's Mate Second Class aboard the USS Vestal, was ordered to cut the lines connecting the ships and escape. Instead, he made the heroic decision to throw a weighted rope line across 70 feet of burning water to save the trapped sailors.
Donald Stratton, Lauren Bruner, and 4 other sailors owe their lives to this act of courage. While all 6 men made it across the rope, only 4 survived their severe burns. Without Joe George's heroic action, all would have perished in the flames.
Why This Pearl Harbor Story Matters
This forgotten World War II story reminds us that true heroism sometimes means disobeying orders to do what's right. The Pearl Harbor attack survivors Donald Stratton and Lauren Bruner fought for 76 years to get Joe George the recognition he deserved.
In 2017, Joe George finally received the Bronze Star for Valor - 21 years after his death. His daughter, Joe Ann Taylor, witnessed her father's belated recognition for his courage at Pearl Harbor.
