Vandalia Boys Called Heroes for Life Saving Actions

Описание: VANDALIA-- Two young boys are being called heroes for their life saving actions and quick thinking when their loved ones were in big trouble.

Wyatt Abney, 8, and Matthew Wolf, 9, both of Vandalia, were awarded with medals of honor and special coins Friday from the city's fire chief.

"It's important for us to recognize these acts of heroism," said Vandalia Fire Chief Chad Follick.

The two young boys did something most grown-ups might not have, and they acted under pressure.

"Where is she bleeding from?" said the 911 dispatcher when eight-year-old Wyatt called back in July. He was spending the day with his elderly aunt, when she fell off a stool and hit her head while fixing an alarm inside her home. She needed fast medical attention.

"Does she have a towel she can put on it to try to help with the bleeding?" the dispatcher asked, "No, usually all the towels are bath towels," little Wyatt replied.

When medics arrived, dispatchers congratulated Wyatt on a job well done.

"Great aid to our 9-1-1 dispatcher on the phone and great aid at the scene providing information," said Chief Follick.

The other child honored, nine-year-old Matthew wolf, was having lunch with his little sister and grandmother outside the Vandalia McDonald's restaurant. His grandmother collapsed and fell unconscious, so Matthew told his sister to stay put, and he ran for help.

"I needed to go find somebody to help so she doesn't just keep laying down in the ground," Matthew explained.

"Oh he did great, he was fantastic I told him he was my hero!" said his grandmother Bonnie after the awards ceremony.

"The kids in our community who get this training are much better tooled to handle emergencies than adults in some situations at least that's been our experience," said the chief. Both Abney and Wolf went through Vandalia's "Passport to Safety" training when they were incoming kindergarten students.
