I made a fly from the heart of the old town of the city of Plovdiv, well preserved from the Bulgarian renaissance period. The city of Plovdiv is the second biggest in the country and its history spans back 8000 years back. It has been continuously inhabited through the ages and this makes it one of the oldest cities in the world. In IV century BC the city was conquered by Phillip II of Macedon (Alexander’s dad) and was given the name Philippopolis. Then in Thracian times it was modified into Pulpudeva, which is where Plovdiv name derived from. The old town overlooks the ruins of old Phillipopolis and the whole central area is built over a forum and stadium from the roman times. The most well preserved roman landmark is the theater, which is a center piece of our flight. It’s columns and statues are symbolic for the whole city. The place continues to serve its purpose until now, as it is housing all kinds of concerts. I had the luck to visit it when Chris Cornell performed in the Theater as one of his last concerts before his untimely death. The center of the city is nearby and can be seen, with the post office building and the historic Trimontium hotel. Trimontium is another Roman name for the city, meaning three hills, and we can witness the highest ones in the distance. In the north we can see the buildings of the International Plovdiv Fair, which is another event that Plovdiv is home of. Near it the river Maritsa is passing through the city in its journey to the Aegean sea. Plovdiv is currently the European capital of culture, along with the Italian Matera city for the year 2019
