12% of global sea trade and 30% of the world’s crude oil shipments pass through the Red Sea.
Since November 2023, Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have been targeting commercial vessels with drones and missiles.
So far:
Over 90 ships have been threatened or attacked
20 ships have taken direct damage
1 ship was hijacked
As a result, major international shipping companies have suspended the Red Sea route.
Ships are now forced to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope — adding 6,000–7,000 km extra distance.
#explainervickyvarma This has led to:
25%–40% increase in fuel cost
Shipping cost nearly doubling
Deliveries delayed by 10–15 days
For India, the impact is direct — as nearly 80% of India’s crude oil and a large share of electronics
