In the British Isles, they use “phone” as a verb. Shall we phone ahead to reserve a table? In the US, people don’t phone somebody. They call somebody. In the UK, if there’s a fire they call the fire brigade. But in the US, people call the fire department.: In Britain, people have a bath or have a shower. In the US, we say take a bath or take a shower. In the UK, they might put on trousers. But in the US, we put on pants. In Britain, pants means underwear! What we call an undershirt, they call a vest. In the UK, they would call this a waistcoat. And then there are lots of different words in the academic world. In England, you might study at university. In the US, you’re in college. Even if you go to the biggest university in the country, you’re still in college. In the UK, you might write a test or sit for a test or do a test. In the US, you take a test. In Great Britain, at the end of a sentence you place a full stop. In the US, you put a period at the end of a sentence. What we call an eraser, they call a rubber. In the UK, the season after Summer is Autumn. In the US, most people call it fall. British people make plans for what they want to do at the weekend. In the US, we do things ON the weekend. If you need someone to watch your kids when you go out, in the UK you call a child minder. In the US, we say babysitter. English people go to the cinema to see a film. People in the US to the movie theater to see a movie. If the film is really long in the UK, there might be an interval. If the movie’s really long in the US, there might be an intermission. In the UK, they go on holiday. In the US, we go on vacation. They take a driving test to get a driving licence- spelled with two C’s. We take a driver’s test to get a driver’s license- spelled with one C and one S. They drive on a motorway. We drive on a highway. They fill their car with petrol. We fill ours with gas. Their cars have a windscreen. Ours have a windshield. Their cars have a bonnet in the front and a boot in the back. Ours have a hood in the front and a trunk in the back. They leave their car in a car park. We leave ours in a parking lot. They wait in a queue. We wait in a line. They walk on the pavement. We walk on the sidewalk. They fill in a form. We fill OUT a form. They live in a flat. We live in an apartment. They take a lift up their floor. We take an elevator. In the UK, this is the ground floor and this is the second floor. In the US, this is the first floor and this the second floor. If they eat a biscuit, it’s what we would call a cookie or a cracker. If we eat a biscuit, it’s something like what they would call a scone. What they call potato crisps we call potato chips. What they call chips we call French fries. We call one of these an eggplant. They call it an aubergine. They call these prawns. We call them shrimp. Once the meal is done, in the US we do the dishes. In the UK, they do the washing up. They take out the rubbish. We take out the garbage or the trash. In England, they tidy up. In the US, we clean the rest of the house. In the US, you might say you’re worn out. In the UK, you might say you’re knocked up. But on this side of the Atlantic if you say you’re knocked up it means that you’re pregnant.
