This war was fought between India and Pakistan in the Kargil region of Jammu and Kashmir, where Pakistani soldiers and infiltrators had illegally occupied strategic Indian posts in the high mountains.

In response, the Indian Army launched ‘Operation Vijay’, and despite extremely harsh and challenging terrain, successfully pushed back the intruders. The war lasted for nearly 60 days, and India emerged victorious on 26th July 1999. Many brave soldiers laid down their lives, including heroes like Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Anuj Nayyar, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is not just a celebration of military success, but also a tribute to the spirit of patriotism, courage, and sacrifice. Across the country, people pay tribute to the martyrs through ceremonies and remembrance events.
