When a couple is applied at a canine with excessive root mesial inclination by using straight wires, the crown will move mesially and pull the entire dentition forward. This side-effect is called "rowboat effect" and it can be avoided by the application of a segmented tool, such as the rectangular loop previously to the use of continuous archwires.
