Some variables to take into consideration when deciding what pitch to call are the following:
1. Pitcher strengths
2. Hitter weakness/tendencies
3. Gamer situation
4. The success or failure of the previous pitch & hitters reaction to that pitch and,
5. In game adjustments to what is working and what isn't working for the pitcher and, the umpires zone.

And there are two "schools of thought" for sequencing:

1. Pitching "by the book," meaning throwing the pitch that everyone is expecting. (ie. Get ahead with the FB, us off speed as an out pitch. After hard in go soft away and visa versa. After low off speed, elevate a FB and visa versa,
2. Pitching "backwards" or "against the book" or "backwards." Meaning double up, triple up or even quadruple up on a pitch type. Instead of throwing an off speed pitch away after a FB in, you throw another FB in. Etc.
