Historically, the region around Ipsala has served as a strategic crossing point for centuries, due to its location along the Evros (Meriç) River, which forms part of the natural boundary between Greece and Turkey. The current modern border infrastructure was established after the signing of the Lausanne Treaty in 1923, which set the borders between the two countries following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
The Ipsala crossing officially opened for international travel in 1953 and has since evolved into a major route for both commercial and passenger traffic. It plays a crucial role in Turkey–EU trade and is also part of the E90 European route, a major transcontinental highway connecting Lisbon to the Middle East.
