In a pivotal move to sustain and enhance the Indian Air Force's (IAF) light combat capabilities, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to place an order for 113 additional General Electric F404 engines, building on the 99 units ordered in 2021 and 75 secured since the early 2000s. This significant procurement, the F404's status as the backbone of India's indigenous Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programs, earning it the moniker "Desh Ka Engine" (The Nation's Engine). With these orders, the F404 is poised to power the Tejas fleet for the next 20-40 years, barring a mid-life switch to a new engine post-mandated engine run cycles, as India continues its pursuit of self-reliance in aerospace under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
