Open from the 10pm newscast on Rincon's Fox affiliate in Spokane, Washington and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Recorded on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
This is the first newscast of the station's new 10pm news share with local ABC affiliate KXLY. Previously, the station had a resource sharing agreement with KXLY from 2002 to 2004 when Fox 28 produced their newscast in-house. This is the first time however that KXLY is producing the newscast for Fox outright.
KXLY was chosen largely by default to take over from KHQ, since KREM already does a 10pm for sister station KSKN. The contract with KHQ for them to do their morning and 10pm news was discontinued after 22 years at the end of February. My guess is due to some shifting in the region involving Rincon and Sinclair stations (Rincon is not a subsidiary of Sinclair, nor a sidecar for them, but does have close ties to them). Sinclair does not own a station in the Spokane market, unless distant KLEW is counted, and they do not produce their own news any longer. Sinclair does own the CBS affiliates in the adjacent Yakima/Tri-Cities markets, and Rincon owns those Fox affiliates.
Cowles, who owns KHQ, also owns the NBC affiliates there, and those Fox affiliates also were getting news from the local NBC affiliates. No idea if this all changes now because recently Sinclair handed the keys of the local CBS affiliates to Rincon, who again already has the Fox affiliates in that market as well. In this case, it would make a lot of sense that KHQ wants nothing to do with this. It's unknown who decided to blink first, but in any event, KXLY was willing to step in and take over the Fox newscasts in Spokane. They will continue the 10pm newscast every night and the weekday morning 7-9am block.
It'll be interesting to see if they end up doing a live 10pm newscast on Saturday nights, and if because they would already have a crew in-house for that newscast, if then KXLY would finally get live 11pm newscasts back on Saturday after almost 20 years (the station canceled their Saturday 11pm news in 2008 during the recession and never brought them back, opting for various syndicated programs over the years — however around 2023 they did begin airing a simulcast of KXLY+, their streaming news channel, Saturday nights at 11pm, restoring some type of news programming to that slot in many years). We'll just have to check back next Saturday and see.
It also appears there are some refreshed graphics that aren't used on the normal KXLY broadcasts, which look pretty sharp. Music is the same as KXLY, "Unity" from In The Groove.
