The Castle Built to Guard What No Fortress Was Meant To

Castles were built to keep enemies out.
But in the forests of Bohemia stands a fortress that seems to have been built for the opposite reason.
Houska Castle, constructed in the 13th century north of Prague, defies nearly every rule of medieval fortification.
It guards no river.
Protects no town.
Controls no trade route.
Lacks the traditional fortifications to keep intruders out.
Instead, legend claims it was raised over a deep, bottomless pit to seal a chasm that locals believed was a Gateway to Hell.
According to medieval folklore, strange sounds once echoed from the depths, and dark creatures emerged at night from the bottomless chasm. And one condemned prisoner who was lowered into the pit returned aged, silent, and terrified — dying days later without ever explaining what he saw.
To seal the chasm, the castle's chapel was built directly above it.
Dedicated to the Archangel Michael — the commander of God's army against Lucifer — was decorated with the most unsettling Gothic frescoes.
These frescoes depict distorted figures, strange hybrids, and a famous female centaur aiming her bow with her left hand — a symbol long associated with evil in the Middle Ages.
Centuries later, Houska Castle's sinister reputation deepened when the German military occupied the site during World War II.
While there is no hard evidence of occult activity, speculation persists that Nazi interest in the castle had less to do with strategy and more to do with occult reasons.
Today, the castle remains sealed.
No excavations are permitted.
And the truth of what lies beneath its foundations remains buried.
