The Basilica: St. Mark's Basilica is the centerpiece - a stunning Byzantine-style cathedral that houses the remains of St. Mark the Evangelist. It's famous for its golden mosaics, ornate domes, and the four bronze horses on the facade (though the originals are now inside to protect them from weathering).

The Campanile: The tall bell tower standing separately from the basilica is one of Venice's most recognizable landmarks. Interestingly, the current tower is actually a reconstruction - the original collapsed in 1902 and was rebuilt by 1912.

Doge's Palace: This Gothic masterpiece was the residence of the Doge (Venice's elected ruler) and the seat of Venetian government. It's connected to the prison by the famous Bridge of Sighs, so named because prisoners would sigh at their last view of Venice before imprisonment.

The Square itself: Napoleon called it "the drawing room of Europe." The square is enclosed by elegant arcaded buildings housing cafes like Caffè Florian (opened in 1720, one of the world's oldest coffee houses). The square is also famous for its pigeons and for flooding during acqua alta (high water).
