The Andromeda galaxy is our nearest galactic neighbor. It is about 2.5 million light years away from Earth. Andromeda is the most distant naked eye object you can see in the night sky.
Although several minor galaxies lie closer to our Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy, is the closest large spiral galaxy to ours. It is also the largest member of the local group.
There are around one trillion stars in the Andromeda Galaxy, compared to 400 billion stars in our own galaxy. Not only does it have a lot more stars than the milky way, but Andromeda is also enormous, with a diameter of around 200,000 light-years across, which is nearly one and a half times longer than our galaxy.
Unlike most of the galaxies, that are moving away from us, due to the expansion of the universe. The andromeda galaxy is racing towards us, at a whopping speed of around 110 kilometers per second. Eventually, in four billion years, andromeda will merge with our galaxy in a huge galactic collision.
But what if these galaxies were to collide tomorrow. Will all the stars and planets suddenly smash into each other?
Could our solar system survive this massive crash. And what would this galactic light show will look like from earth?
This is what would happen, if the milky way, and the andromeda galaxy, collided with each other.
