Описание:
Red Sea gorgonians are soft corals belonging mainly to the families Gorgoniidae and Plexauridae, widely distributed on coral reefs of the Red Sea.
🔍 Morphology
Gorgonians have flexible, branching structures forming fan-, bush-, or whip-like shapes. Their skeleton is made of gorgonin, allowing them to bend with currents. Colors range from yellow and orange to red and purple, depending on species.
🌿 Habitat and ecology
They inhabit coral reefs from shallow waters to deeper slopes, often in areas with strong currents. Oriented perpendicular to water flow, they maximize food capture and provide habitat for many reef organisms.
🍽️ Diet
Gorgonians are suspension feeders, capturing plankton and organic particles from the water using their polyps.
🔬 Ecological significance
These corals increase reef complexity, offering shelter and nursery grounds for fish and invertebrates. They are sensitive to physical damage, pollution, and climate-related stress, making them important indicators of reef health.
