David Lau has built an Atmos 7.2.4 system in his garage for entertainment while working on his "too many cars". Note the red pillars of the hoist in the audience shots. In the video David demonstrates the system to SMWTMS members playing examples revealing the progression from early "quad" systems, CD-4, open reel tape, and DTRS.
Everything except the main receiver and streaming tuner was assembled from various systems scattered around the home and studio, and is probably considered vintage or antique. The equipment includes:
CD-4 demodulator: Technics SH-400
SQ decoder: Sony SQD-2020
4-channel open reel tape: Sony TC-854-4S
DTRS digital tape for 24-bit 5.1 mixes: Tascam DA-78
CD transport for 20-bit DTS-EX surround playback: Alesis 9600
Atmos receiver: Marantz SR 7015
Streaming tuner: Apple TV 4K
Surround front speakers: 2x ADS L500
Surround rear speakers: 2x AR
Surround back speakers: 2x ADS L500
Height speakers: 4x Realistic Minimus 7
Center speaker: KEF
Subwoofers #1: 2x JBL 1600 15” in bass reflex enclosure by David L. Clark
Subwoofers #2: 2x ElectroVoice 10” in band pass enclosure by James Stevens
Power amp for both sub channels: Crown Power Base 3 (modified for 3 fan configurations since both channels are loaded to 2 ohms)
The turntable is a Mitsubishi Linear Tracking Turntable LT-20. Watch Dennis Green's SMWTMS video on its restoration. • Mitsubishi Linear Tracking Turntable LT-20...
The microphone on David Lau is styled after the original RCA Today Show lavaliere. The mic is an MXL 603 Cardoid in a big windsock. (The all to visible stand mic was not used for this presentation.). Watch the SMWTMS video about the lavaier. • Acoustically Ideal Lavalier Microphone
The audience heard copyrighted music that cannot be played on YouTube.
Carly Simon - You're So Vain
Isao Tomita - Debussy - Gollywogg's Cakewalk
No Business Like Showbusiness - played and arranged by Alan Goodnow, Loew's 175th Churce "Reverand Ike's Church" is now called Loew's 175th Street Theatre https://unitedpalace.org/https://unit...
Jazz Festival - Sweet Georgia Brown
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - Dreams
Since YouTube would not convey the immersive sound, David Lao adds these comments on the selections:
CD-4 Carly Simon: Played with discrete separation, yet with considerable distortion possibly due to 50-year-old vinyl, the optimistic technology behind the format, and lack of a test disc to precisely calibrate the CD-4decoder
Four Track Analog Tape: Alan Goodnow’s organ track: Gave a convincing sensation of being immersed in the warm acoustic of a 3500-seat theater with a massive theater pipe organ
Six Track Digital Tape: Jazz Festival tracks: Clearly the audience's favorite, placing the listener right in front of the band, surrounded by the crowd behind.
