*ABOUT THE MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL*
The Merrie Monarch Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian culture. It is named in honor of King David Kalākaua, the "Merrie Monarch," who reigned from 1874 to 1891.

King Kalākaua is credited with revitalizing Hawaiian cultural traditions—including hula, myths, medicine, and chant—that had been suppressed for decades by missionary influence. He famously stated, "Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people."

Today, the festival is the pinnacle of hula, drawing thousands of visitors to Hilo every Easter week to celebrate the native language, arts, and traditions of Hawaiʻi.
