(25 Apr 1980) Baba Gurbachan Singh, aged 50, the leader of the Nirankari Sikhs in India was assassinated in New Delhi last week by two unindentified men who also killed his bodyguard and injured two other people. Following the death of the Nirankaris leader police have taken precautions to avoid any violence in the city. In the past years, his sect has been in confrontation with the Akali Sikhs, the latter objecting strongly to the Nirankari religious book which they consider to be against the Sikh religion.
the dispute between the two groups has been very violent at times -- in april 1978, seventeen people died and more than 100 others were injured in a clash at amritsar. more violent confrontations took place in the following months in several other cities, including new delhi.
