Landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rains took the lives of more than 30 people in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday (August 27).
A landslide on Tuesday (August 26) on the pilgrim route to the famous shrine of Vaishno Devi killed at least 30 people, said Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Authorities also ordered the closure of educational institutions in Jammu, which weather officials said was deluged with 368 mm (14.5 inches) of rain on Tuesday.
Overflowing water in the Tawi, Chenab, Jhelum, and Basantar rivers caused floods in low-lying areas.
Weather experts have attributed the Western disturbances and winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal as the reason for such heavy rainfall.
