The UnRally is a semi-secretive gathering of two-wheel enthusiasts in the Oregon desert. “An experiment in intentional disorganization,” the principles mirror those of Burning Man (active participation, leave no trace, self-reliance, everyone’s invited, no commerce), but with the added element of motorcycles (particularly dual sports, adventure bikes, dirt bikes, and mini bikes) ripping through the surrounding trails and playa.

The event is about 600 miles from Seattle, and our last minute change-of-plan for getting there involved loading two bikes (Yamaha XT250 and Honda XR600R) in a 2005 Ford Freestar Minivan. After a long drive (broken up by short skateboard breaks in Redmond and Bend, Oregon), we rolled onto the playa in the early evening Thursday, and were immediately greeted by all the glorious chaos of UNRally.

Daytime means riding trails around the playa, chasing dust devils, visiting hot springs, and jumping little sage mounds. Nighttime is party time, with flame-throwing art cars zooming through the darkness. On the final night, The Scattering sends all participants across the playa in motorized disarray.
