School teaches much more than just lessons in a book. “When you go to school that’s where you learn social norms, social skills, how to interact with somebody.” But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the world shut down. “They got pulled out, depending on their age developmentally, and now when they’re around other people they really don’t know how to handle it, depending on what their experience has been,” said Lee Health Psychologist Rose Anne Illes.
Illes said little kids, especially around ages 4-6 might be ok around family, but, “They might go out in public and not know how to respond, because now they see a stranger coming near them but they don’t know how to act.”
Parents can bridge that social gap by showing them examples through media and talking with their young ones. “It might be talking to them about it what to expect when you are around other people if you are in the grocery store, if you’re going to a birthday party, how things typically are…Now that kids are going back to school so they’ll be learning it, but there still may be a little gap in between what they been dealing with and when they actually learn it,” said Dr. Illes. Each age group will have a different reaction and response, so patience and understanding is key.
