Take a before and after video of every makeover you do from the very beginning. I’ve found that you can get better quality pictures by getting a screen-grab from a video than from taking photos. ⁠
Indirect light from a bright window gives me the best footage, but it really depends on the time of day. If you don’t have access to a window, make sure you have a good lighting set up, and use a hand-held light as well.⁠
You don’t need a hundred photos for a good portfolio. Even if you only have 5-10, it’s a good place to start, especially if a couple of them are professionally taken.⁠
Hiring a model and/or professional photographer is a great way to build a portfolio, but it gets expensive, so listen to your budget on this one.⁠
Representation matters! You never know who is out there, and clients are much more likely to book you if they see you’ve already worked on someone who looks like them.⁠
Be consistent with your socials but don’t get bogged down. When you’re just starting out, just post your before and afters, and pay no attention to metrics. You don’t have to make complicated content (unless you really have a passion for it!) This will validate your work until you’ve built up your skills and client base.⁠
🔥If you’re making a portfolio page on your website and you only have a few images, combine this with your reviews to flesh it out even more. It will look a lot less sparse if you have 3 images, than if you have 3 images + 3 testimonials. ⁠
🔥Whatever you do, DON’T FILTER YOUR WORK. I know it’s tempting to retouch every image, but your authentic work will resonate more with clients. Let them see the real results and they’re trust you even more!⁠
