Australia Retail:
Australian retail turnover rose 1.8 per cent in February 2022, seasonally adjusted, according to the Retail Trade figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The February result follows a 1.6 per cent rise in January 2022*, a fall of 4.1 per cent in December 2021*, and a rise of 7.1 per cent in November 2021. Cafes, restaurants and takeaways had the largest rise, up 9.7 per cent. This saw the series rise to a record level as businesses overcame staff shortages and closures from previous months to return to more normal trading conditions. Other industries also benefitted from a return to favorable trading conditions including clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing at 11.2 per cent, department stores at 11.1 per cent and household goods retailing at 2.3 per cent.
Japan Retail:
Japan’s retail sales fell for a third straight month in February amid the country’s biggest wave of virus infections adding to concern that the economy’s recovery may have slipped back into reverse.Sales fell 0.8% in February from the month before, as shoppers cut back spending on clothes and accessories, the economy ministry reported Wednesday. Analysts had expected a 0.3% decline. Compared with the previous year, sales were down for the first time since September, also falling 0.8%. Most analysts said they expect Japan’s economy to shrink this quarter in a Bloomberg survey this month, as the omicron curbs and higher energy prices fueled partly by the war in Ukraine hit consumers.

Russia Retail:
Russia is looking to China, India, Iran and Turkey to plug the gap created by an exodus of western retail companies. Moscow grapples to find ways to combat its growing isolation in the face of sanctions. The Russian Council of Shopping Centres (RCSC), an organisation representing developers, shopping centre owners and retail chain operators, said it was negotiating with its corresponding representatives in the four countries about finding alternatives to western brands. According to a statement on RCSC website, A list of foreign companies that have temporarily ceased operations in Russia was sent to them so that appropriate equivalents replacements can be found.
