The Royal Institute of British Architects and the British Embassy UAE partnered to look at the role of British Architects in the UAE; past, present and future.
Architects and industry experts were invited to discuss the UAE’s Vernacular Architecture at an industry reception hosted by His Majesty’s Ambassador, addressing key issues and questions.
As Abrahamic Family House opens in Abu Dhabi, RIBA asked the question: how is UAE architecture reflecting local heritage? Does the future of contemporary UAE architecture lie in it’s past? How can we conserve architectural heritage? We look into the influence of British architects in the UAE and how their design is inspired by local heritage, culture and climate.
Together we explored the history of architecture in the UAE, the renovation and restoration of historic buildings, the influence of past British architects such as John R Harris and looked to the future of UAE architecture; the use of indigenous methods and materials, digital design and contemporary architecture from practices such as Adjaye Associates, Foster + Partners and Zaha Hadid.
