CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Whether it's the street code of silence or fear, many people who saw Demetrius James murdered stayed silent.
James was a student and working at the SPCA when he was killed. Demetrius James came to his old neighborhood July 10, 2010 for a memorial for a murder victim; then he became one.
"I walked down the street with him as a little boy, never knowing my baby was going to end up murdered right here," said Demetrius' mother, Angela Jo James.
Right off Craft Street in Winton Terrace Demetrius was killed for the $5,000 he saved to buy a car that day. It took him three years. He'd been riding his bike to school and work at the SPCA. There three men surrounded him, one shot him and stole the money as he died.
Homicide investigators said they know who killed Demetrius, "We know who he is, where he is and the situation he's facing. We believe that may help people have the courage to come forward."
The suspect was already convicted of murder and sentenced to life. So those who stayed silent about Demetrius' murder allowed another murder to happen. The other two men have also been in jail or out of town but police need more to file charges.
The memorial painting at the SPCA was to celebrate Demetrius' love of animals. Demetrius was going to study nursing at Cincinnati State. He worked with injured animals and helped his mom get off drugs. His mother said she wanted justice for dreams destroyed that July night six years ago.
There is a $3,000 reward for the right information about the killer. It will be paid out through Crime Stoppers and that number is 352-3040.
