I want to first make a correction regarding the video. I stated in the video that I was using my neck pickup but was using my bridge pickup, which is a small mistake, but I like to be accurate.
The Naga Viper by Catalinbread is a treble booster made in Portland, Oregon. This pedal has three knobs that are Range, Heat and Boost. Range picks the frequency you would like to boost…it is pretty much a tone knob. Heat the amount of gain you want, and Boost is volume. The Naga Viper is modeled after the legendry Dallas Rangemaster used by Queen and Black Sabbath. The Naga Viper is a silicon based treble booster not a germanium like the original Dallas Rangemaster. Like with anything regarding music gear, a treble booster made of silicon vs germanium has both good and bad points. Silicon treble boosters work much better with other pedals and are more consistent in quality than germanium, making them much easier to work with and you are less likely to get a defective pedal. Germanium treble boosters do have a very special harmonic and sonic characteristic that you get when put in front of a pushed tube amp that really cannot be imitated by a silicon based treble booster.
The Naga Viper can get you close to that classic Rangemaster sound from the 60’s and 70’s by turning the volume on a tube amp all the way up and putting the Range, Heat and Boost all the way to max. It will not get you a true germanium treble tone, but it will get you about 90 percent of the way there. Most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference because that is a very specific tone.
I made this video because there are pretty much no videos that show a treble booster with a high gain amp. I wanted a guitar pedal that boosted the mids and cut the lows for soloing. Overdrive pedals can boost the mids and help control the low end a little better, but they don’t cut the low end. This video shows that a treble booster does a fantastic yet subtle job of cutting through a mix by turning the Range and Boost all the way up and keeping the Heat down. I would highly recommend a treble booster for live playing for solo parts especially those that drop tune and are having a hard time standing out in a mix. The only downside with this pedal is it does come with some extra noise, so you are probably going to need a noise gate to control that extra noise.
I hope this video was helpful. Let me know is you have any questions on Naga Viper pedal, and I’ll be happy to help.
I would like to thank and acknowledge Nick Neblo for making the backing track I used. Link is below:
