*The Current That Carries Him*
Elias Carter had spent his entire life fighting. Not in the way of fists and battles, but in the quiet, relentless war against life itself. He had clawed his way out of poverty, built a business from nothing, and burned every ounce of his energy chasing success, convinced that peace lay on the other side of struggle.
For years, he toiled, sacrificing relationships, health, and joy in pursuit of an empire he could call his own. Every setback only fueled his resolve—he fought harder, worked longer, and closed himself off to anything that threatened his momentum. But life, as it often does, had other plans.
At forty-three, Elias found himself standing in the ruins of everything he had built. His business collapsed under the weight of an economic downturn. His wife had left long before, tired of being second place to his ambitions. And the fire that once drove him had burned him hollow.
Desperate for escape, he packed a single bag and left the city, wandering without direction. His journey led him to a small, unremarkable village by a river, where an old fisherman named Solomon watched him with knowing eyes.
"You look like a man who's spent his whole life fighting the current," Solomon said one evening, as they sat by the water’s edge.
Elias scoffed. "Life doesn't give you what you want unless you fight for it."
Solomon chuckled, tossing his fishing line into the river. "That’s true—until it isn’t. You ever seen a man drown, Elias?"
Elias shook his head.
"They don’t drown because they can’t swim," Solomon continued. "They drown because they panic, thrashing against the current instead of letting it carry them."
The words settled deep in Elias’s chest. That night, as he lay beneath the open sky, he wondered—had he been drowning all along?

The days in the village stretched into weeks. For the first time in his life, Elias stopped fighting. He let go of control, allowed himself to wake without an agenda, to work only for the sake of doing, not achieving. He helped mend boats, fished for his meals, and spoke with people not as assets or obstacles, but as souls.
And then, without effort, the very things he had chased his whole life began to find him. A sense of ease he had never known settled in his bones. The joy of simple conversation filled the silence he once feared. Opportunities came—not from force, but from connection. A small woodworking business sprouted under his hands, not as a means to conquer, but as a gift to share.
One evening, he stood by the river again, watching its endless flow. He had spent decades fighting against life, trying to bend it to his will. But life had always been like the river—meant to be surrendered to, not conquered.
Elias smiled, whispering his final act of defiance against his old self.
"I surrender."
And in surrendering, he found everything he had been searching for.
