Italian fisherman Alessandro Biancardi landed a massive catfish measuring 2.85 meters in the Po River, surpassing the previous world record of 2.81 meters for the largest Wels catfish ever recorded. After documenting the catch, he and his team released the fish back into the river, with evidence sent to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) for official recognition.
The Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) is Europe’s largest freshwater fish, thriving in warm waters across Italy, France, and Spain. The recently caught specimen is estimated to be 20–30 years old, much younger than individuals found in colder northern habitats like Sweden, where growth is slower.
Experts highlight that warm temperatures, abundant food, and a suitable environment contribute to the species’ giant size. However, the ongoing drought of the Po River could threaten these massive predators’ survival.
