These leaders have been on the frontlines—advocating for voting rights, educating the community on redistricting, uplifting youth voices, and encouraging civic participation at every level.

Their work aligns with my doctoral capstone project in social work, Closing the Civic Empowerment Gap, which implements the Seal of Civic Readiness as a culturally responsive civic-education intervention. Through student-centered learning, simulation-based civic projects, and teacher–civic leader collaborations, we aim to strengthen civic knowledge, motivation, and confidence among BIPOC youth.

In Elmont, our students are exploring Redistricting and the Right to Vote: Gerrymandering and Democracy, learning how policy shapes representation, and examining cases like Coads et al. v. Nassau County. They’re also learning how marginalized communities continue to fight back through legislation such as the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act.

This is not just a program.

It is a movement toward building informed, empowered, and justice-focused young citizens.
