Hi. I'm Matt Metzger, the Forage and Cover Crop Specialist with Millborn Seeds.
Today we're out here in a field of our Turbo Sudangrass Hybrid. It is a true Sudan by Sudan cross. It's not a Sorghum Sudangrass.
A few traits that this plant has that makes it unique is it has a briquetted dwarf gene. So it's got a shorter stature but it puts all the leaves of the taller sudangrass varieties into a more compact plant. You have less risk of lodging and as you can see we have no worries with that in this field. It's standing up really well.
This plant is also a BMR. It's got that brown midrip trait for the added feed quality. It does have a dry stalk trait as well. Which helps it dry down at haying time. That's what most producers are doing with this is making dry hay with it. And you can put up some really nice hay with those traits combined.
What's you're looking at now is actually the regrowth and will be the second cutting on this. We're at the end of September now, but this was planted after Peas and Oats. So it was planted in July. We have one cutting off of here already. This is what came back. You can see it regrows really well.
The initial growth is really quick on this. Kinda the rule of thumb is once it's up and going, give it about 40 days and cut it. No matter how much growth you have, cutting it will cause it to tiller out and thicken up the stand. You can see we have a good thick stand here.
And we're going to have one heck of a second cutting off of this.
If you're looking to really max out your Forage for the year, this makes sense.
